Heat-resistant
protective clothing has the function to protect the
human body against the damaging effect of high temperatures,
i.e. with it a protective shield is given to the body
behind which a normal climate or at least a climate
bearable by the human body prevails although the wearer
moves about in an extremely hot zone.
The utilization
of the reflection has proved to be the most effective
means of defence against heat radiation. Yet only since
it has become technically feasible to arm fabrics with
metals in such a way as to produce a reflective surface
the reflection can be put to practical use as a means
of protecting man against radiating heat. According
to the intensity of the heat load the reflection is
to be backed up by insulation or cooling as the reflective
surface can always reflect just a small portion of the
radiation. The choice of the most appropriate outfit
can for that reason be made only under the aspect of
the special duties of the unit concerned.
As
a general rule may be quoted:
low heat load
= light protection
high heat load = heavy protection
